A question I’m repeatedly asked is “What I should I buy before you come for my organizing session?” The answer: NOTHING. BUY NOTHING. Pro Organizer TIP: Wait to buy storage containers until you know1) What you need to organize2) The size you need.Otherwise, you might waste time and money buying the wrong thing.
In some of the kitchens I’ve organized, a shoe box, plastic box, or basket from another room can be re-purposed. Aluminum pans have been used (fold down sharp edges) and food storage containers in which to corral small items. My philosophy: use what you have before purchasing something new.
In situations where there is nothing available to use or a specific size is needed, then and only then go shopping. However, note…*Not all containers are created equal*. Look for durable, not junky, and preferably coordinating containers for the same room. Know your preference: do you like metal, plastic, wicker, cardboard, see-through, lidded, etc.
Do you like neutral colors or colored ones? Does the room have a color scheme? If you don’t know what you like, peruse Pinterest and search ‘storage solutions’ or ‘kitchen storage’ or ‘bedroom storage’ or whatever.
Storage containers can be a useful tool if you buy the right kind. Otherwise, they add to the clutter problem instead of solving it.
